Overview
Reimagining workflows to support recruiting coordinators
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with the Recruiting Engine UX team again to improve internal tools used by Amazon’s recruiting team.
Timeline
Summer 2022 — 3 months
TEAM
Design mentor, UXR, PM
ROLE
UX Design Intern
BACKGROUND
My internship project focused on creating a north star concept for recruiting coordinators to track interview logistics
This tool would eliminate countless hours of manual tracking, and help recruiting coordinators prioritize and action on their tasks.
Since this was my second time interning with the RE UX team, I was given a lot of freedom to set my own timeline and own the vision for my project.
CHALLENGES
Narrowing down ideas for a visionary and ambiguous project
I was encouraged to think, “what would the ideal solution be if there were no constraints?” and work backwards from there. Since there were no hard guardrails, it was tempting to design everything.
To narrow down on the most impactful concepts, I organized a design workshop with product and design partners to align on goals.
Since my project was for internal folks, it was also extremely helpful setting up weekly feedback sessions with recruiting coordinators. These meetings help me continuously iterate on my designs to meet their needs.
Standardizing a complex and personalized process
The scheduling space was extremely complex; different regions, orgs, and roles had different processes that I needed to take into account. I learned to audit internal documents and frequently ask questions to my teammates and recruiting coordinators to build my understanding of the space.
LEARNINGS
Show your work early and trust the iterative process
As a perfectionist, in the past, I struggled to show work I was not proud of. I learned to embrace being confidently wrong to catch areas of improvement earlier on, and not get too attached to my work as I continued to iterate based on feedback.
Be intentional with how you frame your work
During my internship, I was presenting my work constantly to other designers, product and engineering, and internal workers. I learned to tailor my communication based on who I was meeting with in order to get the specific feedback I wanted.
Since this work is under NDA, please contact me if you would like more information!
Thank you to Pengpeng Yu, Kristy Streefkerk, Shane Hepler, and all of the Recruiting UX team for your support this summer!
